Could this be the return of the magazine world? Perhaps this is it, the (re)start of another beautiful time in our lives.

I started my career in magazines. It was a time of indulgence, elegance and excitement. My first fashion week in NYC was full of such extreme energy and beauty. There were no reality tv stars clogging up the front row. There were editors next to editors next to editors. The room was wide-eyed with passion. People watched the runway and gasped when something new! stunning! gorgeous! came waltzing past.

It's a different world now. But when I saw this cover of the new Harper's Bazzar with the always elegant Gwyneth Paltrow, a little glimmer of hope began to spark inside of me.

I miss magazines. I miss Domino each month. I miss Jane. I miss seeing all my friends names on the mastheads. I'm channeling that time with the strongest energy. I need it. I think we all do.

sometimes I see a photo and I go wild. My mind starts to run free and a new life begins to develop within me. I go to places way better than my dreams from a photo. This picture just stole my soul for a few seconds. It took me to a bright studio space by the water, overlooking the Hudson River on a spring day. I am there with a bunch of people, Natalie is by my side, Dylan is not far, Amanda, Sam, all my girls, we are creating, we are laughing, we are listening to everything from Madonna to U2 to Kent. It's a day of ladies and we're all in 5" heels and there are empty Starbucks cups around. There's a vase of white flowers and this fresh air smell. No one is in a rush, no one wants to be anywhere but there.

That's what a photo can do to me at any given moment.

Deep down inside I've always believed that my mind felt most free by the sea. the air, the water, the endless blues. As a kid I would daydream of summer on the coldest days of winter. I would cry in bedroom with the door locked at the end of August, wishing for just one more day with the sand and salt and those friends that made me everything I wanted to be. I was me. The beach isn't about money or things. It's not about how smart you are or how big your house is. Summer meant peanut butter and jelly sandwiches after swim team practice, ice cream after inverse dives off the board, showers with sand on the ground and red sleepy eyes on the drive home. The beach meant everything to the 11 year old me. The beach means everything to my current self.

I want to be free. I want to be there now.

In college the household of girls I lived with (there were 12 of us, none of which were part of a sorority), would hold these huge "yucka"* parties on weekends. We'd buy about 18 pounds of sugar, 100-200 lemons, endless vodka and mix it all together in this giant bathtub-like pan (literally the thing couldn't be lifted alone, it was about 1.5 feet deep and 1 foot wide).

We would walk around the party with this massive pot and everyone would drink out of it screaming "yucka" as the concoction dripped down their necks.

It was a very civilized time in my life. Obviously.

When I saw this beautiful pink drink, my first thought was: "a grown up yucka" - yes, I could go for a little screaming while drinking a (pink) lemonade vodka drink right about now. It's Friday night, it's cocktail hour. I need out.

It’s been two years. I remember the two first months felt like forever. Two years ago I thought I would be ok in a two years time. I wasn’t back then, it felt like a never ending pain. But the reasonable me kept on saying "Hold on, just hold on. I will be okay, it will end one day and it will go faster than you expect. It just doesn’t feel like that right now. But I know it will.”

I honestly thought two years would be more than enough to… I don’t even know to what. To move on, to stop hurting, to stop crying, to stop loving. Perhaps even to forget?

But I haven’t. I haven’t stopped crying or hurting. I haven’t really moved on. And I have definitely not forgotten.

So now I don’t know what I should tell myself anymore.

I guess people who say that you’ll never forget your first true love are actually telling the truth.

1. a comfortable pair of shoes

NYC winters are brutal, boots that you can walk 60 blocks comfortably in are a necessity. Summer and spring you need the same ease as you'll definitely be skipping taxis and subways to do the journey on foot. Sandals, converse, smoking flats, whatever you fancy, as long as they are comfortable.

2. the perfect blazer

No matter who you are, a blazer will change your life in NYC. Great for work, just as good for going out on the town. Find something super structured and classic, wear with leather pants or a wide leg jean. Either way, you'll always have a go-to piece regardless of the time of day.

3. leggings

No matter who you are, leggings will always come in handy in NYC. They are an easy go-to for work with long tops and blazers or for weekends with sweaters. And then you can head to the gym with one less item in tow.

4. great dresses

I literally have a closet full of dresses. They are everything in this city. Keep them modern and timeless so you can wear them for any occasion and forever. Black is obviously an easy go-to but nude, navy and printed (a la DVF) are just as simple to wear.

5. bags

a chic weekender is just as important as an every day handbag. You need something which you can use for the gym but will also take you out of town for a few days. I lug my gym stuff and my iPad around the city with me, it's important to have something you wont mind bringing with you to dinner or to meetings.

6. sunglasses

For hangovers, there is the luxury of every possible place in NYC delivering food to your door. When you finally decide to venture out, sunglasses are your next best friend. Plus, everyone in this city loves feeling a sense of being incognito. Forget makeup, forget makeup remover, just throw on your glasses.

7. cozy sweater

Of all the girls I asked about a packing list, they all mentioned a good sweater. Usually I layer up for walking to work and schlepping around on weekends and then strip down once I arrive indoors. So go for something that's not too bulky but that is def warm and layer-able.

8. an iPhone

Not only is it ideal for taking photos of sights and events, but you have a built in subway map, gps and everything else that will help getting around the city easy.

9. a jacket for every season

just like a good pair of shoes, you need a jacket for each season and one that looks good. J. Crew has fabulous winter styles on sale right now. A great little leather jacket is good for almost every time of year, too.

10. accessories

Everyone I know in this city wears the same thing over and over again. It's just easier that way. It's a place of comfort and I suppose that's what comes along with finding a few great pieces you love. So find yourself some great statement jewelry to change up the look of your basic black dress, your every day blazer and pants, your tee and jeans...scope out cheap pieces at topshop, asos, H&M, and even forever 21. great items that will take you through a season and you can toss after.

99% of Luca's life is spent outside the house. We live in the city where there are parks everywhere and things to explore. From puppy stores to libraries to farmers markets and street performers. But yesterday was mentally and physically draining, the first of its kind, as we tried to spend time outside but the weather made him beyond miserable. So we stayed home and turned the house into an art gallery.

Apparently all of my mom friends also had exhausting days trying to keep their brood content.

Here are some ideas next time snow hits and you're left alone with kids that like to climb and destroy more than they like to sit and chill.

Make your own game of hide and seek with objects they love (her favorite doll, his favorite cookie). While they search, you can sit and relax. Key.

Take apart all your old magazines and newspapers to create a masterpiece picture. You can patiently go through all your old Vogue's and be entertained while they go crazy ripping and tearing.

Redecorate and organize. Every time I go through drawers and closets, Luca finds a toy or piece of clothing he hasn't seen in awhile. He spends 30 minutes with it while I get to move on to the next spot.

Build a race track around the house with tape. Luca and I did this over the summer and it kept him entertained for months. Literally.

a heel that you can walk in, not stutter, but strut in. Super high, very minimal, totally chic.

2. an organized life
forget searching your bag for your lip gloss or that business card you tossed in there weeks ago, get organized with a small 2012 calendar (1. Gaga's workshop x Barneys NY pocket diary. 2. bright yellow Kate Spade organizer) and a small bag for within your bag (1. here's one that can double as a night out clutch. 2. this is a super cute sequined one under $25.

3. a favorite/go-to drink
I'm that girl that never knows what to order to drink. I drank greyhounds (vodka grapefruit) for a decade but not too long ago gave them up. Now I'm constantly on the hunt and it's a real pathetic mess when I head to dinner or out for drinks. Knowing what wine you love or cocktail is best makes life easier for everyone involved. find your drink. stick with it. Never overdo it. (The Little Black Book of Cocktails will give you some ideas)

 4. matching lingerie that's both sexy & comfortable

Leave the trashy stuff, it's about simple and elegant pairings to wear daily. no one needs to see it (if they do, that's a bonus, obviously), instead it's about making you feel amazing on an every day basis.

7. a personal scent

Know how you're instantly transported back to your first boyfriend from middle school each time you smell Drakkar cologne? Well leave a lingering scent, it's all you need to keep people thinking of you long after you're gone.

8. stunning photos from a well documented trip
When I was a freshman in college my first English teacher had just returned from a solo 6-month adventure in India. I remember her sitting in front of the class with breathtaking photos in her hand, each one more precious than the last. She spoke about the trip like poetry. That moment is ingrained within my mind forever. There's a true beauty behind capturing the world and sharing it with others, inspiring them while showing them another side of you.

9. a style icon

She doesn't need to be of Hollywood caliber, maybe she's your grandmother or the girl that lives next door. Whomever she is, let her inspire and excite you each time you go to get dressed in the morning. Watch how she puts things together, feel her ease. For the first time in a long time I didn't make resolutions for myself over the new year. Part is that I feel quite content in life, the other part is I really couldn't come up with anything substantial worth me feeling guilt over if I didn't abide by it (cause isn't that what new years resolutions are all about?).

But today, as I started to clean closets and empty drawers, I realized what kind of resolutions I wanted to add to my life in 2012.

I want to rid my life of the unnecessary, on all accounts. Toss objects and thoughts that don't have significance. Today I started with a bathroom drawer that I have filled with everything from mascara to earrings to face scrubs and soaps. Next I'm moving to the top part of my closet, the level that I cannot reach (therefore do I really need anything up there?).

Next resolution? Wear more of what I decide to keep. I have an awful habit of wearing the same thing daily (winter: black jeans, cozy cashmere sweater. fall: jeans, a tee and blazer. spring: long dress and little jacket. summer: dresses and bikinis). But I want to add more into the mix - bright lips, bright layering pieces, different accessories.

And lastly, I want to add bits of color to my home life. I am a natural toned kind of homemaker. I live in a palette of whites and grays. But starting now, I am going to introduce bits of color to random parts of my home - in artwork, pillows, bowls and rugs.
